Sometimes your life is split by a single decision.
I’ve spent every day of the last seven years regretting mine: he left, and I didn’t follow. A thousand letters went unanswered, my words like petals in the wind, spinning away into nothing, taking me with them.
But now he’s back.
I barely recognize the man he’s become, but I can still see a glimmer of the boy who asked me to be his forever, the boy I walked away from when I was young and afraid.
Maybe if he’d come home under better circumstances, he could speak to me without anger in his voice. Maybe if I’d said yes all those years ago, he’d look at me without the weight of rejection in his eyes. Maybe if things were different, we would have had a chance.
One regretted decision sent him away. One painful journey bought him back to me. I only wish I could keep him.
*A contemporary romance inspired by Jane Austen’s Persuasion*

Roxane's Review:

A Thousand Letters – Staci Hart
A Thousand Letters has earned 5 stars from me and now sits atop my favourite reads for 2017. This book is downright raw and intense. An emotional roller coaster like no other and it is easy to see that Staci Hart poured her heart and soul into this one.  This book will pull at your heart strings more than once, make you think, reflect and sob mercilessly before repairing the damage to your broken heart.
This book has left me wondering how it is even possible that I have not read the beautiful words of Staci Hart before. The story is chocked full of stunning, thought-provoking poetry that gives the story so much meaning, depth and emotion. The poetry was so poignant, and I found myself re-reading the passages to ensure I totally grasped their full meaning.
I went into this book blind with only a title and an author name. It didn’t matter what it was about, I had heard about Staci Hart and I needed to read something from her.  I don’t think I could have made a better choice.  As humans, we struggle with life and all the trials and responsibilities that get thrown at us.  A Thousand Letters will bring you face to face with the struggles of the heart, love, pride, grief and death.
Wade Winters went off to war bitter and heart-broken. The longer he is away, the more broken and hardened he becomes.  Even though he knows he is in love and will never love another, he believes be keeping silent and keeping his distance, he is somehow protecting Elliot from a life of worry and regret.  Sadly, he has inflicted more pain than he knows.
Summoned home to his father’s deathbed, Wade and his family are forced to deal with a pain so great, it is practically unbearable. Being in the vicinity of his first and only love, Elliot, does not make the task any easier for Wade. His struggle is great but his pain bigger than him. Wade’s journey to freedom from his self-imposed binds is a hard one to watch unfold as well as frustrating, but none of us can imagine the pain, suffering and death he has seen – the reason for his burden. War changes a man.
Elliot has been in limbo waiting on life to find her for seven years. She gives of herself freely and selflessly with little to no gratitude in return. She gets her gratitude in the innocent eyes of those she cares for. Seven long years of silence have still left Elliot with a glimmer of hope that someday, she can right the wrong that she made and start living her life.
This story holds so many truths. Reminds us of topics most people are so scared to voice. Reminds us how important it is to learn to carry on, live in the future and not hold on to the past. Managing to not bury yourself in grief, is the one true gift you can give yourself.
I was totally captivated by this book, felt their pain, cried with them in grief and sadness. Wade and Elliot have so much love to give, they just needed to learn how open up their hearts to give it and accept it from each other.
"This will be my last; my heart can't take any more.
I hear you. Your silence is deafening, the answer clear.
Since I'm sorry will never be enough,
                                                             I'll only say goodbye."

About the Author

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life -- a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can't forget that. She's also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She's been a wife, though she's certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She's also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she's been drinking whiskey. From roots in Houston to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she's not writing, she's reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics
